Motsepe Foundation Championship title race takes new twist

The Motsepe Foundation Championship title race took a significant twist on Friday afternoon, 21 April 2023 as Cape Town Spurs capitalised on Polokwane City’s draw against JDR Stars with a victory against Platinum City Rovers.

With the 2-0 win over City Rovers at Athlone Stadium, CT Spurs leapfrogged Polokwane City into first place with three games left in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Despite being reduced to 10-man in the second-half after Morne Nel was red carded, CT Spurs proved their superiority to claim positive results.

CT Spurs came into their clash against City Rovers sitting in the second spot behind Plk City, level on points. But the Polokwane side held the advantage on goal difference at the summit of the table.

Prior to playing their respective matches, Plk City and CT Spurs were tied on 50 points after winning their games last weekend.

Elsewhere, Polokwane City blew their 2-0 lead as they drew 2-2 with JDR Stars at Giant Stadium on Friday.

Rise and Shine travelled to JDR needing nothing less than a victory to maintain their slim lead at the top of the table as the chasing pack were hot on their heels.

However, the Limpopo-based side slipped at the top to taint their chances of regaining promotion to the DStv Premiership since they were relegated in the 2019/20 season.

CT Spurs have now taken a two-point lead at the top of the second tier table with 53 points while City collected one point to be on 51 points.

Meanwhile, Casric Stars will be looking to keep track with the Motsepe Foundation title race when they face University of Pretoria at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Saturday.

In another match that took place on Friday after La Masia beat Pretoria Callies 2-1 at Dobsonville stadium.
