Ex-Jomo Cosmos striker Mwafulirwa embarks on voluntary coaching in Malawi
Former Jomo Cosmos striker Russel Mwafulirwa is voluntarily coaching Malawi Super League side Ekwendeni Hammers FC. Mwafulirwa told FARPost that he was doing the voluntary work to keep busy with the Northern Region-based Hammers.
“I drill the players, especially strikers, during my free time. I join the team’s training sessions, especially on Friday, to impart knowledge to up and coming players,” he said.
The ex-Ajax Cape Town forward said he returned to Malawi four months ago from Sweden, where he was undergoing a coaching course.
He said his former Swedish club IFK Norrkoping sponsored and facilitated the beginners’ course.
“I did not finish the course; hence I will return to Sweden later to finish the modules. The Covid-19 pandemic affected my logistical arrangements, and I had to come back home,” Mwafulirwa said.
He played for Cosmos from 2003 to 2006 before clinching a move to Ajax, then the Swedish side in 2008.
