Ghana add Nicaragua tie to pre-World Cup schedule
The Black Stars of Ghana have added a tie against Nicaragua to their pre-FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 international friendly match schedule.
The friendly will be the second in Ghana’s September schedule and the third game overall in their warm-up itinerary ahead of the Qatar finals in November.
Ghana and Nicaragua will meet in Spain on September 27 in Lorca.
The friendly will come four days after Ghana’s big international friendly date against Brazil on September 23 at a venue yet to be confirmed by the Brazilian FA.
Ghana also has a third friendly on the cards scheduled for November against fellow World Cup finalists Switzerland.
That friendly will be played on November 17 in Abu Dhabi. Ghana is in Group H at the FIFA World Cup, where they will play Uruguay, South Korea and 2016 European champions Portugal.
The Black Stars will kick off their Group H campaign on November 24 against Portugal.
Meanwhile, Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o is convinced that Asamoah Gyan’s wish to play for Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar stems from his passion for the West African country.
The 36-year-old former Black Stars forward said he was eager to don the national team jersey again at the World Cup later this year.
Interestingly, Eto’o’s Cameroon handed Roger Milla, who had retired then, a swansong tournament at the 1994 edition.
The record four-time African Player of the Year sees the wish as a “love for his country”, according to Football Ghana.
“I think it’s a good thing to have a dream, and I believe for all African sons that gave us joy while playing, it is just natural that they nurture such a dream.”
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top goal scorer after scoring 51 goals. He has played at three World Cups, including 2010, which South Africa hosted. He was also at the 2006 and 2014 editions.
