I have nothing to prove at the World Cup, insists Ronaldo
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo insists he has nothing to prove at the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.
At the age of 37, this might the last World Cup appearance and the last chance for Ronaldo to clinch the gold.
Ronaldo has won every major trophy he has contested for in his career with different teams except for the World Cup.
Leading from the front, Ronaldo and his troops have failed to impress at the World Cup finals.
In the two previous editions, the 2014 and 2018 finals, Portugal exited the tournament in the group stage and the round of 16, respectively.
However, he, admitted that winning the prestigious football trophy would be a dream come true.
CR7 SAYS HE IS PROUD OF WHAT HE HAS ACHIEVED
“If I have to prove something at 37 years and eight months, I’d be worried. After what I’ve already done and won, it would be a surprise for me,” Ronaldo told the media.
“Of course, I have to demonstrate what I am year after year. Everyone has opinions. Is the World Cup the most important competition? Yes, one of the most. It’s a dream to win, but I’d still be proud if I didn’t win any more trophies.”
Despite the 2022 edition being different from the previous ones because it’s played in November, Ronaldo says it’s no excuse for the team to under perform.
“The team is ready, it’s a different competition it won’t be an excuse. I think the players are all well prepared and the staff of the Portugal delegation,” Ronaldo added.
“We hope to have an excellent tournament and see what will happen.”
The 2016 European champions were drawn in Group H alongside Ghana, South Korea and Uruguary.
Their World Cup opener is against Ghana on Thursday. Kick-off at Ras Abu Aboud Stadium is at 6 pm.
