Two PSL clubs that were beaten by Chiefs to Samkelo Zwane’s signature

Eugene Zwane, father of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Samkelo Zwane, has revealed the two PSL clubs Kaizer Chiefs edged out to secure his son’s signature.

Spotted at a young age, Samkelo, then 17, attracted interest from other top-tier clubs as his talent was evident early on.

He was snapped by then-Chiefs reserves coach Arthur Zwane. Samkelo honed his skills for a few years with the reserves team before earning a promotion to the first team under Arthur’s leadership.

The 22-year-old Zwane made his professional debut in a match against Stellenbosch FC in 2022 and went on to play 15 matches in all competitions under the tutelage of Arthur Zwane.

Eugene, a former Orlando Pirates midfielder, emphasized that his son wasn’t given preferential treatment at Chiefs. He believes Samkelo’s potential was clear from a young age.

He disclosed that both Mamelodi Sundowns and the now-defunct Bidvest Wits were interested in acquiring Samkelo, but Chiefs acted swiftly to secure his signature.

EUGENE ZWANE ON HOW CHIEFS BEAT SUNDOWNS & WITS ON HIS SON’S SIGNATURE

“The issue of which club he was going to play for…for me it was not really that important,” said Eugene Zwane in an interview with FARPost.

“I think it’s more of a supporters thing because they feel as if there’s rivalry, therefore, ‘how do you allow your son to play for Chiefs having been a Pirates player’.

“But for me it was never an issue. I think the fact that Arthur is family and he saw the potential.

“And it was not even a favour, he had to prove himself to Arthur several times. But at that time, we were already getting enquiries from Wits then.

“Some coaches at Wits were already saying they want him to come over and Sundowns, some coaches were asking if he can come over.

“But Arthur was very quick to move and that’s how he ended up at Chiefs. He was 17 then.”
