Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams has revealed the one thing the national team desperately needs to improve ahead of the back-to-back 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Liberia.
The two matches are important and are a must-win for Hugo Broosโ side. Bafana Bafana are eyeing a return to AFCON after missing out on the 2021 edition in Cameroon.
The first match will be played on Friday, 24 March, at Orlando Stadium, and the return leg will take place four days later on Tuesday, 28 March, at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Liberia.
Bafana head into the encounter a motivated side and high in spirits following their recent results. In their last four matches they came out victorious thrice and drew one.
Liberia on the other hand are struggling, they are on a three match losing streak and have failed to find the back of the net.
Williams is aware of whatโs at stake in the next coming games. Therefore, he has urged his teammates to be solid and avoid conceding goals.

KEEPING CLEANSHEETS
โMassive games coming right up, the boys are looking forward to it. We just need to think about the magnitude of whatโs at stake in these next two games,โ said Williams.
โItโs AFCON qualifiers, itโs massive, probably the biggest tournament on the African continent.
โYou want to pride yourself if you keeping cleansheets especially at home. If you have a cleansheet itโs one foot over the line because of the fire power we have in front.โ
POSITIVES FROM THE LAST MATCHES
The shot stopper went on to state positives they picked in the last matches.
โThere were many positives out of that camp, the fact that we didnโt lose we had positive results. The negatives is that we conceded two goals.
“We donโt want to concede silly goals, we conceded via set play [in the previous matches]. We know we’re not the strongest in the African continent but just having the right mentality, fighting mentality to challenge and not make it easy for them.โ
Group K is tricky after Zimbabwe was banned by FIFA following the governmentโs interference in football matters. South Africa and Liberia are second and third on the log after one match played respectively.
