Siyabonga Ngezana reveals the Kaizer Chiefs nightmare he can’t escape
Four years have passed, but the sting of a single Kaizer Chiefs slip-up remains a chilling nightmare for defender Siyabonga Ngezana.
In a candid interview, Ngezana opened up about the game that continues to haunt him, the crushing impact it had on Chiefs, and the lingering pain it stirs even today.
Ngezana’s recent Romanian Liga 1 title win with FCSB stands in stark contrast to his boyhood club, Chiefs. Sadly, the Soweto giants remain trapped in a decade-long trophy drought.

KAIZER CHIEFS TITLE LOSS A LINGERING SCAR FOR SIYABONGA NGEZANA
The match in question was the 2019/20 season’s finale, where Chiefs lost the PSL title to Mamelodi Sundowns. A heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Baroka FC, while Sundowns crushed Black Leopards 3-0, sealed Chiefs’ fate.
Khama Billiat had given Chiefs an early lead, but Baroka’s Manuel Kambala levelled in the 59th minute, shattering the Glamour Boys’ title dreams. This was a devastating blow after Chiefs had led the PSL table comfortably before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a season suspension.
The pandemic also led to spectator-free matches, adding to the unusual and tense atmosphere.
WHAT SIYABONGA NGEZANA SAID ABOUT THAT FATEFUL DAY
Though only a substitute during the title-deciding loss, Ngezana vividly recalls the day and confesses the scars still run deep.
“It still cuts deep and it’s still the memory because I’m still stuck to that memory you know,” Ngezana told FARPost from his Romania base.
“It’s still in my memory that Sundowns took the league like in the last game of the season after we played a draw against Baroka FC.
“The league just slipped away just only in the last 30 minutes of the game. So, it is still a memory that is still in my head and remember it vividly.”
The last-gasp triumph of Sundowns in the 2019/20 term became a captivating chapter in the league’s history, enthralling fans.
