Jackson Mabokgwane provides update on his future at Richards Bay FC

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane has provided an update on his future at Richards Bay FC.

The experienced goal-minder joined Richards Bay ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season on a free transfer.

Before signing with Bay, Mabokgwane spent the last six months of the previous campaign with Black Leopards in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, having joined the club in January 2023.

Mabokgwane has struggled to cement a regular starting berth at the KZN-based side, and he’s a second-choice keeper to Salim Magoola.

The 36-year-old goalie has featured in six matches across all competitions, conceding nine goals and keeping two clean sheets for Richards Bay.

After signing a one-year deal with the Natal Rich Boys at the start of the campaign, the former Bafana Bafana international has entered into the last two months of his contract.

And with the PSL season ending next month, Mabokgwane has revealed that he’s yet to open talks with Richards Bay regarding his future at the club.

“We have not started talks about my future at the club, but I’m happy here, and I’m sure I’ll be hearing from my manager with regards to that. Right now, my focus is to return to action, hopefully before our game against Kaizer Chiefs,” Mabokgwane told FARPost.

The ex-Baroka FC goalie also detailed his role to youngsters at Bay, stating: “Having been around in the game for some time, it is my responsibility to help and guide the younger ones.

“I try to help the boys analyse their performance, from training to matches and I’m glad most of them have responded well and have shown in their improved performances. And I try to be a big brother and here and there, advice about professionalism off the field as well.”

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Mabokgwane at Richards Bay FC considering his lack of game.
