Kaizer Chiefs urged to make sensational transfer move for Sundowns goalkeeper

Kaizer Chiefs have been urged to make a sensational transfer move for a highly-rated Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Uncertainty looms over the goalkeeping position at Amakhosi as veteran Itumeleng Khune remains in limbo. The club has yet to make a decision on Khune’s future, sparking speculation about a potential shake-up in the goalkeeping department.

Khune’s future with Amakhosi hangs in the balance as his one-year contract extension, signed last July, nears its end this season. The veteran goalkeeper, a mainstay at Chiefs for over a decade, faces an uphill battle to retain his spot due to a recent dip in form and well-publicised off-field issues.

The 36-year-old’s season took a sharp turn after making just five appearances. A disciplinary action stripped him of the captaincy and resulted in a three-month suspension for a reported training ground incident involving alcohol. Since his December return, he has been unable to reclaim his starting spot.

In the current season, Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen have shared the responsibilities between the sticks. Petersen started the season as the first-choice goalie for the Soweto giants. However he has lost his place in the starting lineup after committing a handful of costly mistakes.

The former Bidvest Wits star has made 10 appearances across all competitions, conceding 10 goals and keeping four clean sheets for Chiefs.

Meanwhile, Bvuma has, in recent times, taken up the number one spot at Chiefs, but he has also failed to guide his side to positive results.

The Glamour Boys youth product has played 16 games in all competitions and conceded 16 goals while keeping eight clean sheets. On the other, fourth-choice goalkeeper, Bontle Molefe has made the bench a few times but he is yet to feature for the club.

WHICH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS GOALKEEPER SHOULD CHIEFS SIGN?

With Chiefs evidently facing problems in their last line of defence, retired goalie Brian Baloyi says his former team must consider signing Dennis Onyango from Sundowns.

“We have Itumeleng Khune, but we don’t know what’s going to happen with him. So you need an Onyango with vast experience, and he can give you two or three seasons,” Baloyi told FARPost.

“Same way that Arthur Baartman did; may his soul rest in peace. He came in and started pushing Khune to a point where he started playing regularly.

“You need someone like that, someone who will come in and push these young players so that they lift up their game. If Kaizer Chiefs were to want to sign a goalkeeper now, I will say sign Onyango.”
