Orbit College coach reacts to Pirates’ decision on loanee Gumede

Orbit College assistant coach Kabelo Machete has reacted to the decision made by Orlando Pirates regarding goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede, who is currently on loan at the club.

Three days ago, this website reported that the Buccaneers have made a decisive decision on the goal-minder ahead of the next season.

Pirates succumbed to a decision to recall Gumede from the North West club when the season comes to an end, with the futures of Richard Ofori and Siyabonga Mpontshane hanging on thin ice at the club as their contracts run out at the end of this campaign.

Gumede joined the Soweto giants in July 2023 from the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League champions Dondol Stars following their good run in the 2023 Nedbank Cup tournament.

The shot-stopper, Gumede, played a significant role for his side to cause upsets for DStv Premiership teams. Dondol made headlines when they eliminated SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 and AmaZulu FC in the Last 16.

Pirates almost became Dondol’s victim, as the Sea Robbers survived the SA football third-tier side’s scare in the quarter-finals, winning 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 tiresome minutes.

Following Gumede’e stellar performance, Bucs moved swiftly to secure the services of the talented goalie.

ORBIT COLLEGE COACH ON SPHAMANDLA GUMEDE’S RETURN TO ORLANDO PIRATES

In an interview with FARPost, Orbit College assistant coach Machete stated that Gumede will return to Pirates unless the teams negotiate for another deal.

“First and foremost, Mr Gumede is a Pirates player on loan at Orbit,” he told this publication.

“So, all loaned players go back to their parent club end of the season until such a time that teams need to agree to loan again.”

As things stand, the Motsepe Foundation Championship side finds themselves fourth on the table with 37 points from 24 games.
