4-star Adepoju overtakes Sulumba in Malawi’s Golden Boot race

Babatunde Adepoju scored four goals for Nyasa Big Bullets on Wednesday to regain Malawi’s TNM Super League Golden Boot lead.

Adepoju scored in eithed half to steer Bullets to a 5-1 win over Sable Farming. The Nigerian took his tally to 16 goals from 22 games. That is two goals clear of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers forward Muhammad Sulumba.

ADEPOJU HAS OVERTAKEN SULUMBA

The 26-year-old forward scored the first goal in the 22nd minute when he headed into the net a corner-kick.

Adepoju’s goal levelled matters, three minutes after Sable had gone ahead courtesy of Ghanaian Michael Tetteh’s strike.

The two teams went to break level at 1-1. When play restarted, Bullets doubled the advantage through Thomson Magombo’s 52nd-minute goal.

Magombo rose the highest to guide Blessings Mpokera’s delivery into the net.

Thereafter, Adepoju took control of the business, as he scored in the 76th, 78th and 93rd minutes.

Adepoju has overtaken Sulumba. Sulumba led the Golden Boot race for over a week after scoring four goals in two games.

Sulumba is now in second place with 14 goals, followed by Chawanangwa Kaonga in third position with 12 goals.

The big win ended Bullets’ three-game winless streak. It condemned the rookies Sable to the relegation zone, lying third from the bottom.

Bullets lead the standings with 58 points from 25 games, 10 points clear of second-placed Blue Eagles.

The police-owned Eagles wasted an opportunity to get closer to Bullets after suffering a 1-0 loss to Kamuzu Barracks.

Olson Kanjira scored the lone goal for the soldiers of Kamuzu Barracks. The soldiers are in third place, 10 points behind the leaders Bullets on the 16-member table.

Bullets have won the most 15 league titles. They are chasing a fourth on the spin under Zimbabwean coach Kalisto Pasuwa.

The bottom three teams are relegated at the end of every season of the elite Malawi league.

A season runs from March to December in Malawi.
