AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has made the club’s stance on Virgil Vries clear.
The former Swallows goalkeeper has been training with the club since last month.
However, according to Zungu, the Durban outfit is yet to make a decision on him. “Virgil Vries came to train with the team and had been carrying an injury, although he was rehabilitating from the injury.
“He was not entirely fit, and we subjected him to several medical tests. He is now training with the team,” Zungu told FARPost.
He went on to reveal the kind of feedback he has received from the technical team regarding the former Kaizer Chiefs goalie Vries.

“The feedback I’ve got is that he has made a very good impression. Virgil Vries can be signed anytime. He’s not attached to any team. We’re not under any pressure to sign. We will assess and examine whether we sign him, or we don’t.
“A decision has not been made. When we sign him, it’ll be because we believe he will add value. We’re not doing him a favour.
“We do not please anybody by signing him or not. Everyone knows his pedigree. He was critical to Swallows,” explained Zungu.
He believes a balanced team should have three to four competitive goalkeepers considering injury, red cards or suspensions.
Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Veli Mothwa is the club’s number one, with Gambia’s Jean-Noel Amonome his closest challenger. Olwethu Thabiso Mzimela is their third goalkeeping option.
“It would help if you were not found wanting in that department when your number one [goalkeeper] is not there. Number one needs to be pushed,” added Zungu.
He noted that competition in other positions was perfect, and he believes Vries could add that to the goalkeeping department should they decide to sign him.
