Banyana off to a good start at AWCON
Banyana Banyana got off to a good start when they beat Nigeria 2-1 in the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations on Monday.
The morale-boosting victory marks their first in the competition over the tournament’s defending champions, who went in as favourites.
South Africa, ranked third on the continent, got their first goal through Jermaine Seoposenwe after being set up by Noxolo Cesane at the hour mark.
Hilda Magaia added the second two minutes later, thanks to a defence-splitting pass from Refiloe Jane.
The West Africans, ranked number one in Africa, pulled one back in injury time through Rasheedat Ajibade, but it was a little too late for the defending champions.
Linda Motlhalo was named woman of the match after playing a blinder for Desiree Ellis’ charges.
