Ex-Chiefs target on the move in Europe

A former Kaizer Chiefs target Kobamelo Kodisang has made a move in Europe.

The South Africa youth international will spend the 2022/23 season on loan at newly promoted Portuguese side Grupo Desportivo de Chaves.

His new club, Chaves, will play in the Primeira Liga.

Revered journalist Pedro Sepulveda tweeted in Portuguese, saying, ‘Kobamelo Kodisang will be loaned to Desportivo de Chaves with purchase option’.

The man who gave the 22-year-old his PSL break as a schoolboy, Cavin Johnson, will be pleased by his decision to stay overseas.

“I gave Kobamelo his PSL debut as a 15-year-old,” Johnson has previously told FARPost.

He is on record advising the former Under 23 star to continue developing his game in Europe.

Just a month ago, the former Al Ahly assistant coach said there was no need for his prodigy to return home as interest in his signature was widely reported.

“Playing abroad is a good thing, and Kobamelo deserves to be one of the best players.

“He is 22 years old and has shown that he can influence a game – he is in Portugal in a good league, especially for a player his age,” he told Isolezwe.

The talented winger spent three seasons with Braga’s reserve side before getting his senior team debut towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign. Johnson believes his senior team appearance is a massive indicator that the future is bright.

“He showed patience playing in the lower division, so it was nice to see him get a chance to play in the first team, which means he is a player they have high hopes for,” he said.

Kodisang, who had a stint with Bidvest Wits, has played for all junior national teams and is tipped to have a bright future with Bafana Bafana.

His new club have a buy option should he excel during his loan stint with them. Chaves were founded in 1949 and currently uses the Estádio Municipal de Chaves, just 10km north of Portugal.
