Downs Ladies’ Thalea Smidt angling overseas move
Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies midfielder Thalea Smidt has set her sights on an overseas move and revealed her desired destination.
Smidt has divulged her ambitions of playing in Europe in the future, especially in England, Spain and France.
The 24-year-old has been instrumental for Banyana Ba Style during their treble-conquering campaign (Hollywoodbets Super League, Cosafa Caf Women’s Champions League qualifiers and the Caf Women’s Champions League in Egypt).
Speaking after Banyana’s second training session at Highlands Park, Smidt said: “I would like to play in the big leagues in Europe. England, Spain and France are some leagues that I see myself at.”
“I like the French league, and I am a big fan of the PSG style of play.
“Playing abroad is definitely part of my ambitions.”
However, the Strandfontein-born midfield maestro noted that her focus is now on the upcoming international friendly game against the Netherlands on Tuesday, 12 April.
South Africa will take on the Orange Lionesses in the much-anticipated friendly in the city of Den Haag (The Hague).
“The focus now is the upcoming game against the Netherlands. You can already see the difference with the girls pushing, and we are much more shaper than we were when we assembled for previous camps,” she added.
“As the coach said, it will be a mental battle at the end of the day, and it will be good to test ourselves against the best in the world.”
