Egyptian expert gives verdict on Lakay’s debut season with Pyramids
An Egyptian pundit has given his verdict on South African striker Fagrie Lakay’s debut season with Pyramids FC.
Ahmed Atta told FARPost that Lakay made a big contribution to Pyramids last season.
He cited the former Cape Town City forward’s work-rate, passing ability and positioning as among his strengths.
“Fagrie is a very good player in terms of attack contribution either with passing or positioning and consistently smart choosing of spaces to run to,” he said.
SUSPECT FINISHING
However, the OnTime Sports analyst said Lakay can do better on finishing.
OnTime Sports is one of the biggest sports television channels in Egypt.
Atta said Lakay could have finished with more goals last season if he was more clinical.
“…he still lacks the most important thing, which is scoring! He doesn’t score a lot and misses very easy chances. I can remember at least four or five big chances he missed in very strange ways,” he said.
TEAM PLAYER
Nonetheless, Atta felt the positives in the South African’s performances outweighed his weaknesses.
“In general, he is the kind of player coaches like to have in their team with his relentless effort and contribution, but without better scoring rate, his place in the starting line-up might be in danger next season,” he said.
The 25-year-old opened his scoring account for Pyramids in February this year when he bagged a brace in the 2-0 win over Zanaco of Zambia in a CAF Confederation Cup match.
He scored barely two weeks after completing his transfer to the Egyptian side in January 2022.
The South African finished as Pyramids’ fourth-leading scorer with five league goals, two goals behind Ramadan Sobhi.
Lakay is the second South African currently gracing the fields of Egyptian football after forward Percy Tau, who is on the books of struggling giants Al Ahly.
Pyramids punched above their weight last season as they finished on second place with 71 points, six points behind champions Zamalek.
