Ex-Ajax midfielder snapped up by Saudi Arabia club
A former Ajax Cape Town midfielder has been snapped up by a Saudi Arabia club.
Gerald Takwara has joined the growing band of Zimbabwean footballers who are finding greener pastures overseas.
The 27-year-old has signed for Saudi Arabian division one side, Ohod FC, after completing a switch from the Motsepe Foundation Championship side Venda Football Academy FC
The Madinah-based outfit unveiled the midfielder this week after he completed the lucrative deal from South Africa.
However, the second-tier league side has kept details about the duration of the player’s contract under wraps.
Takwara has linked up with former Kaizer Chiefs star striker Knowledge Musona and ex-AmaZulu midfielder Ovidy Karuru in Saudi Arabia.
Musona is on the books of Al Tai whereas Karuru plays for Al Shoala in the Saudi Arabian professional league.
Takwara made his debut for Ajax in a 2-1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns in the year 2018, weeks after signing from FC Platinum in Zimbabwe.
The former Tsholotsho FC player then left the Cape Town-based side, now Cape Town Spurs, upon its relegation to the National First Division.
He returned home to Zimbabwe for a dance with Castle Larger Premiership side, Ngezi Platinum, playing for them in the 2019/20 season.
The talented midfielder was soon on his way back to the Rainbow Nation and this time around, he resurfaced at Venda FC where he made 29 appearances and scored twice.
Takwara was among few bright lights in an otherwise dull Zimbabwe campaign at the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where he managed to bag the man-of-the award in the 2-1 win over fancied Guinea in an academic group match played in January 2021.
