Ex-Sundowns star joins Botswana giants
Former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Mogakolodi Ngele has joined Botswana giants Township Rollers, writes Robert Matakanye.
‘Tsotso’ as he is affectionately known, recently parted ways with Gqeberha side Chippa United following the expiry of his contract.
Mogakolodi Ngele, whose career started at Uniao Flamengo Santos, has joined Rollers on a two-year deal, ending his DStv Premiership career that has taken him to clubs like Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, SuperSport and Black Leopards and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
It is his second stint with the Gaborone club after playing for them for two seasons before the now-defunct Platinum Stars signed him in 2012.
The former Sundowns winger was with the Chilli Boys for one season last term, playing 14 DStv Premiership matches as the club avoided the chop.
Mogakolodi Ngele has been linked with several teams in the DStv Premiership over the last few days. He was also linked with a move back to Gauteng, specifically Swallows.
At the height of his career, the 31-year-old represented the Botswana national team at their maiden Africa Cup of Nations appearance.
In 2014, he signed a five-year deal with Sundowns. However, he only stayed at Chloorkop until the end of the 2014/15 season before being loaned out to Wits.
He won the league title with Wits in the 2016/17 season. After returning to the Brazilians the following season, he struggled for game time, only featuring once the entire season.
Pitso Mosimane, Sundowns’ coach at the time, was quoted as saying: “He needs to prove himself to get into the starting eleven.”
On 26 January 2018, he was signed on loan for six months by Absa Premiership team SuperSport United. After that, he packed his bags to Limpopo, where he played for Leopards and TTM.
With the experienced Ngele in their dressing room, ‘Popa’ will be looking to challenge for the league title next season after their bitter rivals Gaborone United won the 2021/22 edition.
