Ex-TS Sporting striker steps up Golden Boot chase in Malawi

Former TS Sporting striker Chawanangwa Kaonga scored for Silver Strikers on Sunday to step up his Golden Boot Award chase in Malawi.

Kaonga was on target alongside Patrick Macheso for Silver in the 2-2 draw with TNM Super League leaders Nyasa Big Bullets in the capital Lilongwe.

Kaonga rejoined Silver last season after a two-year spell with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side TS Sporting.

The Flames forward took his tally to 12 goals from 19 games, joining at the top Nyasa Big Bullets’ Babatunde, who also has 12 goals.

Nigerian Babatunde did not score over the weekend, with Bullets having to rely on goals from in-form Patrick Mwaungulu and Anthony Mfune.

LEADING DUO OF KAONGA AND BABATUNDE

The duo is now one goal clear of second-leading scorer Moyale Barracks’ Raphael Phiri and two goals in front of Muhamad Sulumba for Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

The former Polokwane City striker Sulumba fired blanks on Saturday as Wanderers drew 0-0 away to Kamuzu Barracks FC in the Central Region.

Former Baroka FC forward Robin Ngalande is also yet to score for Wanderers since his recent free transfer to the Blantyre-based team.

It was the first game that involved former Golden Arrows coach Mark Harrison who has started his job as Wanderers’ technical director.

The ex-Chippa United trainer is playing a supervisory role to Wanderers’ head coach Alex Ngwira.

SO CLOSE FOR MBULU

In other games involving former PSL players, former Baroka striker Richard Mbulu had what he thought would be his first goal for Mafco ruled out for a handball on Sunday.

Instead, it was his younger brother Tony Mbulu who scored the consolation goal for Mafco as they lost 2-1 away to TN Stars in Kasungu District, located some 100 kilometres from Lilongwe.

Bullets striker Hassan Kajoke won last season’s Golden Boot Award for the 16-member Super League with 15 goals.

Kajoke has scored six goals only this season for the table-topping Bullets, who are eight points clear of second-placed Blue Eagles.

There are seven games on average for each team to go before the end of the season, which runs from March to December.
