Football icon Pele’s health worsening

Three-time FIFA World Cup winner and football icon Pele is set to spend Christmas in Hospital after his health worsened during his recent hospital stay.

Pele had visited the Hospital to regulate his cancer medication.

FAMILY UPDATE ON PELE

In a statement on Wednesday, the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, where he is admitted, said Pele’s cancer had advanced.

The 82-year-old Brazilian is under elevated care related to kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.

One of his daughters, Kely Nascimento, announced that the legend will stay in the hospital during Christmas.

“We decided with doctors that, for many reasons, it will be best for us to stay here,” she said in a statement.

“With all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us. We will even make some caipirinhas (no kidding). We love you, and we will give up an update next week,” Kely said on Instagram.

Pele has been undergoing chemotherapy in his cancer treatment after the removal of a colon tumour in 2021. The hospital and the family did not confirm if cancer had spread to other organs.

Earlier this month, his daughters announced that Pele had been hospitalised to treat a respiratory infection. The infection was aggravated by COVID-19.

WORLD ICON

Pele is one of the most notable players in the world who played in Brazil for two decades. He was part of Brazilian national teams that won three World Cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

The former New York Cosmos star was named FIFA co-Player of the Century in 1999.

Pele led Brazil to victory in the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains one of the team’s all-time leading scorers with 77 goals.

Neymar tied Pele’s record during the latest World Cup. Several tributes and get-well-soon wishes were made for the former footballer during the Qatar tournament, which was won by Argentina on Sunday.
