Former Arrows coach Mark Harrison lays bare challenge at Wanderers

Former Golden Arrows coach Mark Harrison has laid bare the challenge he faces to turnaround Malawi’s Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC.

Harrison spoke to the media team for the seven-time TNM Super League champions, who are affectionately called Nomads.

The former Chippa United coach said there is need to transform Wanderers on and off the field of play.

“There is a lot of work to do on and off the field. I am here to take the club to another level,” he said.

“This is a project. I have signed a two-year contract and I know things may not happen overnight but we will have to show results in the end.”

He has signed a two-year contract with Wanderers to work as technical director.

The first task for the Englishman is to work with head coach Alex Ngwira and ensure Wanderers reclaim the Super League title.

Harrison said: “We must win titles locally and in the long run at regional and continental levels. For this to happen, we have to look at broader picture, developing football right from the junior sides to the senior team.”

NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TITLE WINNING TASK

However, winning the league title this season might prove a tall order for Wanderers, who were last crowned champions in 2017.

Wanderers are 16 points behind rivals and holders Nyasa Big Bullets with 10 games to go before the end of the season.

COACH’S REACTION TO HARRISON’S ARRIVAL

Ngwira has since welcomed the former Gor Mahia coach at the Blantyre-based side.

“Football is a learning curve; we are still learning. His arrival is a tactical boost. We are ready to learn from him and improve our game,” he said.

“He has played at various levels and managed clubs at various levels as well. We have hope that he will add value to the club.”

Harrison has coached mostly in East and Southern Africa at clubs such as Caps United in Zimbabwe and Township Rollers in Botswana.

The former Mpumalanga Black Aces trainer won the Botswana Premier League title with Rollers in 2016.

The coach then crossed the borders to Zimbabwe, where led Harare City FC to Chibuku Super Cup glory the following year.

The Derby-born Harrison has also coached teams in Tanzania.

Harrison is well known in South Africa following the time he spent at Black Aces from 2010 to 2011 then African Warriors the following season.

He spent a season at Chippa and then Arrows during the year 2013.

The 61-year-old worked for Gor Mahia last year.
