Former Simba coach sacked in Saudi Arabia

Former Tanzania’s Simba coach Sven Vandenbroeck has been sacked by Saudi Arabian Pro League side Abha FC after a poor run of form.

The club announced on Saturday the exit of the Belgian following a run of uninspiring results in the Saudi Arabia top-flight league.

“Abha FC would like to place thanks to Sven Vandenbroeck and its staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club,” a statement from the club reads.

POOR RUN

The former Zambia coach lost his job on Saturday, a day after his club’s 3-0 home loss to Al Nassr in a domestic league game in Saudi Arabia.

The first-round game took place at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium. The Belgian got the sack after failing to lead his team to any league win in five consecutive league games.

Consequently, the poor run of form left Al Nassr in position four with 13 points from six games. Al Shabab lead the 16-member league with 18 points from six matches.

Abha are in position 14 in the relegation zone with a paltry four points from six games. Al-Batin anchor the log table after having just one point from six outings.

Vandenbroeck is by far the best coach Simba have had since the year 2021, when he resigned. The Belgian led Simba to the Premier League title, Federation Cup and Charity Shield.

WALKED OUT

Vandenbroeck won 39 out of 55 games of 10 draws and six losses in all competitions for Simba. The coach took many by surprise when he picked a new job at Moroccan football club FAR Rabat hours after he left Simba.

Vandenbroeck walked out on Rabat after steering them to a respectable third-place finish in Morocco’s Botola Pro to join Abha.

However, Vandenbroeck found the going tough in the Saudi Arabian league at the club, which recently signed former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lius Miqquissone. The Mozambican signed for the team on loan from Al Ahly in Egypt.
