Ghana legend Gyan describes Chiefs as a ‘big team’ in Africa
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has described DStv Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs as a big club on the African continent.
Gyan spoke during the galaxy of stars exhibition, which Amakhosi and SuperSport TV hosted at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena on Wednesday.
The former Sunderland frontman said that the Glamour Boys are one of the best teams in the continent given their rich history and successes over the years. At some point, Chiefs were known as the “Cup Kings”.
The legend went on to heap praise on the club’s facilities, labelling them as “perfect.”
ASAMOAH GYAN SPEAKS…
“It was great to be at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, the club is one of the biggest clubs in Africa and the experience and the facilities are perfect,” Gyan told Chiefs’ media department.
“I wish Kaizer Chiefs all the best in the future and thank them for hosting us so warmly.”
Although Chiefs reached the 2021 CAF Champions League final, where they lost 3-0 to Al Ahly, they have not had much success on the African continent and last won a trophy back in 2015 in domestic football.
In 2001, Amakhosi won their maiden continental title when they clinched the African Cup Winners Cup [known as the CAF Confederation Cup] against Angola’s Inter Clube Luanda.
In the same year, Chiefs walked away with the African Team of the Year accolade at the CAF Awards.
Gyan reckons that he had all the fun as he and enjoyed the opportunity to score some beautiful goals.
“It was a fun game to be part of and I was happy to score some goals. Some of the legends still have it,” he added.
OWEN HARGREAVES CONCURS WITH GYAN ON CHIEFS’ FACILITIES
Former English footballer Owen Hargreaves who was SuperSport’s player/coach on the day concurred with Gyan about the Chiefs’ facilities stating that they are ‘amazing’.
“It was such a cool experience and wicked seeing different guys from different generations showing off their skills. It was fun being with the lads, we had a blast,” said Hargreaves.
The fascinating game ended with a 7-4 scoreline in favour of the Kaizer Chiefs legends.
The SuperSport team was represented by former Bayern Munich Owen Hargreaves, ex-Ghana skipper Gyan, sports anchor Thomas Mlambo.
Former Chiefs legends Stanton Fredericks and Siphiwe Tshabalala, football analyst Phumudzo Manenzhe and Banyana Banyana all-time leading goalscorer Portia Modise.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs side was represented by the likes of first-team coach Arthur Zwane, assistant coach Dillon Sheppard, team manager Gerald Sibeko, development coaches Ntsie Maphike, Donald Khuse, David Mathebula, Jimmy Jambo.
And former players such as Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siyabonga Nkosi, Brian Baloyi, Cyril Nzama, Nhlanhla Kubheka and Lucas Radebe.
