Goal drought worries Zesco after Royal AM date

Zesco United coach Mumamba Numba is worried about his team’s goal drought but he is trying to stay positive after Sunday’s draw against Royal AM.

The result saw Zesco post their third straight scoreless result.

The Zambian club left Durban with a barren result in their 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup second-round, first-leg tie against Royal AM at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Sunday’s result means Zesco must now beat Royal AM in the home led on October 15 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola to ensure they keep Zambia’s only interest in Africa alive.

ZESCO’S CONCERN

“Of course, scoring is our greatest concern. We are very disappointed that despite creating chances, we couldn’t convert them in the game,” Numba said.

“The good thing is we did not concede a goal, but I think it would have been better for us to get a win from here.

“We have a lot of work in our home game, but we just have to encourage our team and work on our finishing because that is where we are not doing well in the games we have played so far.”

The draw sees Zesco still without a goal in their last three competitive games.

Zesco’s drought began on September 17 when they drew 0-0 away to Green Eagles and were held by the same margin by Power Dynamos on October 2.

It is now a month since Zesco scored and picked up a competitive victory when they beat Lumwana Radiants 2-1 at home on September 11.

“Of course, getting a draw is not a bad result. We just have to work hard this Saturday so that we win the game,” Numba said.

Zesco is the last Zambian club standing in Africa after Red Arrows were ejected from the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League in September by Primeiro de Agosto of Angola.

Numba’s side has just entered the CAF Confederation Cup in October after enjoying a preliminary round bye.
