How December helped Sundowns players save money

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana says the unusual DStv Premiership schedule helped the players at the club to save money.

Grant Kekana has been one of the stand-out players since joining Sundowns from cross-town rivals SuperSport United at the start of the 2021/22 season.

And with December being a month of festivities and spending money for friends and family, Kekana welcomed the schedule citing that it helped him and his teammates to save money.

“Obviously it’s been a while since we played this December period,” Kekana told the media at Chloorkop.

“I won’t lie, this December helped us save a lot of money.

“So we are very happy to be here, we’ll just approach this game like all other games then we’ll take it from there,” added Kekana.

The 29-year-old centre-back missed a few games at the beginning of the campaign due to an injury.

However, he has since reclaimed the starting berth in the Masandawana team.

In the current campaign, Kekana has managed to play in nine games in all competitions for Sundowns and he has one goal under his name.

Meanwhile, the 2016 CAF Champions League winners returned to league action in style on Friday afternoon in Pretoria.

Sundowns beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 in a DStv Premiership game, thanks to goals by Mothobi Mvala and Cassius Mailula at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

It was the third meeting between the two teams this season after clashing in the two-legged MTN8 semi-finals.

The Buccaneers knocked out the Tshwane giants out of the MTN8 and made it to the final which they subsequently won 1-0 against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium in November.
