Gavin Hunt tipping Orlando Pirates to dethrone Sundowns in title chase

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt is tipping Orlando Pirates to challenge the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership title chase.

SuperSport have not registered a victory after four games played in the new season. Matsatsantsa opened the campaign with 1-1 draw against Chippa United, followed by back-to-back losses against AmaZulu and TS Galaxy, respectively.

The Tshwane-based side played a tightly contested encounter against the Buccaneers on Sunday, which ended 0-0 as the two teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach have since lauded Orlando Pirates’ transfer policy and suggests they have a squad capable of challenging Masandawana in title honours.

“They [Orlando Pirates] had the ball. They dominate with the ball, they’ve signed well, and they’ve got a hell of a squad.

“They are the closest team to challenge Sundowns. There’s no doubt about that; I don’t think there’s anybody else.

“That’s the team [Orlando Pirates] that will challenge Sundowns,” the 58-year-old told the Media at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Orlando Pirates have been playing exciting passing football with a lot of pace under the new coach but failing to hit the back of the net.

The Happy People have failed to score more than one goal in all their opening five games in the league. José Riveiro-coached team have scored three goals and conceded two goals this session.

“Improvement at this level, we are not talking about formative football. This is not a football academy.

“This is a professional football with a very high level. So improvement is about small things, and we are working on those small things,” the 46-year-old tactician told the media after the match against SuperSport.

The Houghton-based side returns to Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, looking to bounce back to winning ways against Marumo Gallants, who are yet to collect maximum points in the new season.
