Inter Milan striker Chawinga scores Malawi hat-trick
Inter Milan striker Tabitha Chawinga scored a hat-trick as Malawi trounced Comoros 6-0 at the Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa on Monday.
The Scorchers skipper grabbed her hat-trick after scoring in the 63rd, 75th and 81st minutes, before Wezzi Mvula completed the rout in the 89th minute at Madibaz Stadium.
Malawi had 2-0 led through Fazila Chiyembekezo and Rose Kabzere’s strikes at break before Chawinga took over the scoring business.
The comprehensive win took Malawi temporarily to the summit of Group C of the Cosafa Championship with four points from two games.
The Scorchers want to better their performance of last year when they reached the final of the regional football showpiece.
Botswana were taking on guests and champions Tanzania as we went to press at the same venue.
Not only did the Malawian striker score, but she also grabbed a player-of-the match award for the second consecutive game.
The 26-year-old has since entered the Golden Boot chase with four goals from two games, three goals behind current leading scorer Zambia’s goal-machine Barbra Banda.
The Malawian was also on target when they drew 1-1 with Botswana on Friday and walked away with player-of-the match accolade.
Chawinga also scored on her Inter Milan debut when they beat Parma 4-1 in a Serie A Women’s Premier League game last week.
