It’s possible to survive – Jackson Mabokgwane

Baroka debutant Jackson Mabokgwane believes the 1-0 against Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening gives them more hope that their chances of survival are possible if they keep going.

Bakgaga, who are bottom of the DStv Premiership, secured the hard-fought maximum points at Peter Mokaba Stadium to close the gap to just two points between then and second from the bottom club Swallows.

Mabokgwane, whose last league appearance was on 18 May 2021 for Bloemfontein Celtic, says he was delighted to be back playing football after a long layoff.

The 34-year-old added that the win was a significant morale boost, and the club would fight until the end.

“We all know we need to get three points all the way now, so obviously, it’s a motivational boost for the boys,” said the former Bafana Bafana keeper.

“They have not been keeping clean sheets; they have not been winning, so I am just happy that we worked hard to win as a team. So, this win keeps us going, and it shows that it’s possible to survive, so we will keep working hard.

“But we are not thinking about that, we are just thinking about winning our games, so whatever happens above us, we are not focusing on that. The most important thing is to win all our games, and then we will survive. We all know where the team is. We are last on the log, so we all know we needed three points to close the gap between us and number 15,” he said.

“It’s been exactly a year since the last time I played. I think the last time I played was exactly in May. It felt good to be out there and keeping a clean sheet; it’s just a cherry on top. Thanks to the guys for working hard with me at the back especially, and credit to the technical team as well,” said Mabokgwane regarding his return.

“I don’t want to blow my own horn, but what is important is the team. I am just here as a team member, obviously being the experienced guy that has been at the game long. For me, it’s more important to come back and show exactly what I am made of and thanks to the Chairman and the club for the opportunity.”
