Kekana reveals pledge made by Sundowns players during Mosimane’s era

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has revealed a pledge they made as players during Pitso Mosimane’s era that has kept the squad excelling.

Kekana, who retired earlier this year, credits the mentality of players at the club to that particular pledge.

Co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena have done a great job at the club, maintaining a mentality of winning trophies.

Hlompho Kekana’s farewell at Mamelodi Sundowns

“I think it’s the mentality of players and the culture that has been created at Mamelodi Sundowns. We all had agreed that whoever wears the jersey should make sure he represents all the players that are not playing on the day,” Kekana told the media at the Carling Black Label Cup event.

“I think the mentality is still the same, they want to better the change room how they found it. It’s a difficult task because they have to win all the matches.

“The mentality is the strongest point, the players that they assembled they try by all means that they got the same mentality, that’s the winning mentality.

“I think the performance on the pitch helped them to make sure they compete in that space; hence there are so many trophies that they’ve won.”

Kekana backed the current crop of players to fight for Africa’s most elite club silverware this season. He strongly believes they got all it takes to be successful.

“I think the goal of Mamelodi Sundowns is to try to make sure that they dominate Africa and be known as a team that’s winning trophies in the continent.

“At this moment, they are trying to win the second star [CAF Champions League]. I think it’s in their range because they got players that win them matches,” Kekana concluded.
