Khune inspires Chiefs to MTN8 semifinal spot

Veteran Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune returned to goals for the first time in 12 months to produce a match winning performance during the penalty shootout against Stellenbosch in the MTN 8 quarterfinal match at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs go through to the semifinals with a 4-3 win. The match ended 1-1 after extra time.

Khune’s competitive match for Amakhosi was during the same competition against Mamelodi Sundowns. The 35-year-old saved two penalties by William Likuta and Deano Van Rooyen, respectively.

Stellies scored first during regulation time via Sihle Nduli earlier in the second half. But former Stellies forward Ashley Du Preez equalised for the visitors 10 minutes later.

The match was not short of controversy. Match referee Jelly Chavani and his assistant referees made a huge blunder after awarding the hosts a penalty with a minute left during the regulation time. Chiefs forward Keagan Dolly was mistaken for handling the ball inside the 18-area but TV replays clearly showed the ball hit his stomach.

Chavani quickly reversed the decision, sending the match to extra time and subsequently the penalty shootout.

Amakhosi will join Orlando Pirates, and AmaZulu and will wait for the winner of the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United. The draw for the semifinals will take place on Monday night.

In the other quarterfinal, Mamelodi Sundowns beat SuperSport 2-0 courtesy of late goals by new signings Marcelo Allende and Abubeker Nassir.

The newly signed duo was brought in late in the second half as Sundowns sought for a goal.

It was the Chilean, Allende, who opened the scoresheet before Nassir added the other.
