Litmus test for Lesotho at COSAFA Under 20 Championship

Lesotho faces the litmus test at the COSAFA Under 20 Championship when they take on defending champions Mozambique on Wednesday, writes Tlalane Phahla.

Makoanyane XI, as Lesotho’s Under 20s are known, are third in Group B and need to win to progress.

“It’s going to be a tough game for boys, Mozambique are defending champions, and they will try by all means to score as many goals as they can,” said coach Bafokeng Mohapi.

HUMILIATION

He believes the victory over Seychelles boosted his players after a 5-0 humiliation against Angola.

Makoanyane XI picked their first three points in the COSAFA Under 20 Championship, beating Seychelles 1-0, thanks to Neo Maieane’s late strike in the 85th minute.

Molefi Kulehile of Lesotho attempts to send a cross as Ryan Cupidon of Seychelles attempts to make the block during the COSAFA Qualifier match between Seychelles and Lesotho held at Somhlolo Stadium in Eswatini on the 10 October 2022.

On Saturday against Angola, Lesotho looked out of place but much better this time.

While they may have won, it was a hard-fought one against 10 men. Adrian Hoareau was given his marching orders in the 50th minute for a reckless tackle; it was a second booking, and he was sent packing. Makoanyane XI had a numerical advantage and started to take charge of the game. Mohapi also said he felt his team should have been awarded at least three penalties.

BOOST

“I think this is a good boost for our players after losing 5-0; they were a little bit demoralised, they were a little bit down, and this game, I think, gives us a chance to boost the morale of the players,” he said.

“On penalties, you know some situations; you can’t control them. The referees are always the ones who do. We should have had three obvious penalties, but it’s always like this in this kind of game,” he said.

Wednesday’s tie is set for Somhlolo Stadium at 12h30. The COSAFA final is set for Sunday at 15h30 at the same venue.
