Cape Town Spurs live to see another day after crucial win

Relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs secured a crucial win against Richards Bay FC on Friday night, closing the gap at the bottom to five points.

A defeat for the Urban Warriors, who are at the basement of the log could have meant the end to their stay in the DStv Premiership after one season. They came into the match at Athlone Stadium behind by eight points over their closest rivals, Richards Bay, who are in 15th place.

But a late goal by Azola Jakalashe was enough for the home side to get another lifeline in the elite league. It is only CT City’s fourth win of the season.

Recently signed midfielder Thato Mokeke was made captain for the night in his second match for the side. Spurs could have wrapped up the match in the first half as they created plenty of chances but were unable to find the back of the net.

Sanele Barns was a thorn in the Spurs defense with some impressive displays.

Both clubs failed to score in the first 45 minutes as the game went into the half-time break goalless. CT Spurs and Bay came back into the second half guns blazing but it was Spurs who found the winner through Jakalashe with four minutes to go.

The game gave Spurs a lifeline with five games remaining before the league season ends.

Spurs’ last five matches will be against Polokwane City, Royal AM, SuperSport United, Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs.

Richards Bay, on the other hand, will now take on AmaZulu FC, Polokwane City FC, Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City FC and Stellenbosch FC.
