Mbatha highlights importance of giving back to fans

Golden Arrows goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha has taken upon himself to assist different communities due to the struggle to survive and make ends meet.

Mbatha is playing his part in uplifting communities and the goalminder explained importance of giving back to the supporters as footballers.

The keeper is helping different communities around Durban through the Siyabonga Qhamukile foundation, which was inspired by his granny, a parent that taught him the importance of giving to others that might be struggling.

“I grew up with my granny, who taught me a lot about giving back, she was giving, and I took that with me,” Mbatha told FARPost, after out food parcels in KwaMashu on Monday.

“Looking at the current state of living, with what I have, I can make a difference.

“I do have plans for tournaments, like any other player, but for me, it must change lives, not benefit me. We do tournaments to make a profit and forget about changing lives.

He added: “If I were to do one, it must make a huge impact on the community, not on Siyabonga Mbatha.

“It is very important for players to give back; we as footballers are nothing without the community. We must always give back; these people pay a lot of money to watch us either in stadiums or on television and mostly are not working.

“We have so many challenges as a country; we can heal the nation through our talents, but what happens after that? We need to serve them beyond our talent,” explained Mbatha.

Through his foundation, the Umlazi-born star aims to reach different communities, not only in Durban, as he has done some community work in Pretoria.

“As a foundation, we look at tackling townships challenges, not only in Durban but all over South Africa. We visited Pretoria earlier this year, and on Monday, we were at KwaMashu; we want to do more,” he revealed.
