Micho, Cranes spoiled with R42,000 each after CHAN exploits

Federation of Uganda Football Associations [FUFA] has spoiled the Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic and his entire squad with a bonus of R42,000 each for clinching a 2023 CHAN berth.

FUFA president Moses Magogo made the promise to the former Orlando Pirates coach and his crew for the bonuses after the Cranes beat their rivals Tanzania 3-0 on Saturday at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

“I am extremely happy that we have been able to secure qualification to CHAN. As FUFA, our target is to enter and qualify for every tournament. It is not easy to make sixth successive finals, and the target is to perform better than the previous attempts,” he said on the FUFA website.

The FUFA boss hailed Micho for steering the Cranes to the finals on his second stint with the Cranes, which he rejoined last year following stints with Pirates, Zamalek then Zambia national team before making a U-turn to Kampala.

“It is not our policy to go into games without promising qualification bonus, which we didn’t make this time round. But together with the FIFA executive, we have agreed to give $2,000 to every team member as a qualification bonus,” he said.

The Ugandans had gone into the final qualifying round second leg match carrying a slender 1-0 lead after Travis Mutyaba scored in the first leg played in Dar es Salaam last week.

Former SuperSport United player Moses Waiswa, Rogers Mato and Richard Basangwa scored for the Cranes to sail through 4-1 on aggregate to book their place at the 2023 Algeria finals.

Former Cranes skipper Denis Onyango has since showered his praises on his compatriots for booking their CHAN ticket.

The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper, who retired from international football last year, urged Uganda players to represent the country well at CHAN.

“Well done, lads, upon qualifying for the 2022 African Nations Championship [CHAN] in Algeria. We muscle our strength and force in East Africa and command dominance against other regional teams. Go shine,” he said.
