Mngqithi commend Mweene for not ‘sulking’

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has praised veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene for not sulking despite the limited game time.

Sundowns have a galaxy of stars in their team, and Mngqithi has lauded those who are often not part of the match day squad for remaining focused.

Masandawana currently have four goalkeepers in their books.

Mngqithi has been impressed with the behaviour of Mweene, who is yet to feature for the club this season.

Kennedy Mweene.

“Be it you are playing or you are not playing; you are part of the group,” Mngqithi told the media.

“You are part of this collective and you have the responsibility to make sure that you make this collective succeed,”

“That is why we have a Kennedy[Mweene], Dennis[Onyango] Ronwen[Williams] Jody February and Reyaad Pieterse,”

“They know there’s only one goalkeeper who’s most likely to start the match

“But they have a big responsibility to keep each other focused and not think you better than the rest.

The Sundowns coach added: “And if Kennedy is not playing and is one of the players who have a medal of the Africa Cup of Nations, then who do you think you are?

“One player that has achieved so much with this club is still supportive and encouraging these boys and making them believe we can do this.

“Kennedy Mweene is positive everyday, this season he has not played a match and the sad part is that most seasons he is the one who finish the season for us,”

“Almost every season, the last five matches Kennedy is the one solving problems for us and making us to win trophies,”

“So if he was sulking throughout and the time comes for him to lead the team to success he wasn’t going to be able to do so,”

Williams has been the preferred choice between the sticks for Masandawana since joining from the cross-town rivals SuperSport United.
