Pavol Safranko leaves Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departure of Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko after just a season at the reigning DStv Premiership champions.

Masandawana announced on their social media platforms on Thursday that the 27-year-old has left after spending only a season at the club.

Safranko joined Sundowns last season from Romanian Liga 1 side Sepsi OSK, made a total of 29 appearances, and scored nine goals for the club.

One of the key goals that Pavol scored was the winner against Royal AM to ensure that Sundowns progressed to the final of the Nedbank Cup.

“Pavol, who has been a consummate professional throughout his stay at Sundowns, is free to join the club of his choice,” the club said in a statement.

“The Sundowns family wishes him all the best with his footballing endeavours.”

The former Dundee United player had to make way for a foreign spot following the signing of Chile international midfielder Marcelo Allende and Ethiopia striker Abubeker Nassir.

Masandawana also has Erwin Saavedra and Gaston Sirino, with Abdelmounaim Boutouil reportedly on his way to join the reigning DStv Premiership champions.

Safranko started his career at Slovakian side FC Tatran Prešov in 2013. He also had stints at FK Zeleziarne Podbrezova, FC DAC 1904 Dunajska Streda, Aalborg BK (Denmark), Dundee United (Scotland) and Sepsi OSK before his move to Mamelodi Sundowns.

He has also played for Slovakia U21 national team and the senior national team. Šafranko was first called up to the senior national team for two friendly fixtures in January 2017 against Uganda and Sweden.

He made his debut versus Uganda. Meanwhile, the future of striker Kermit Erasmus at the club remains uncertain. Erasmus’ jersey number 11 has been given to newly signed Chilean international midfielder Marcelo Allende.

When asked after the 3-0 win against Stellenbosch on Wednesday evening, co-coach Rulani Mokwena said the club would issue clarity on the 32-year-old soon.
