Percy Tau available for selection after recovering from injury

South African forward Percy Tau is available for Al Ahly selection ahead of Sunday’s domestic league match against El Gouna FC after recovering fully from an injury.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns player joined Al Ahly’s first-team training sessions on Friday, weeks after training on his own.

The struggling Cairo giants, smarting from back-to-back losses, regrouped at El Tetsh Stadium to prepare for the game against El Gouna.

“Our players who played in Thursday’s Egyptian Cup final against Zamalek performed several fitness exercises in the gym. While the rest of our players performed several fitness and tactical drills at El Tetsh. The team’s session saw the participation of Luis Miquissone and Percy Tau in part of the session,” Al Ahly announced via their website.

The winger’s career in Egypt has been hampered by injuries and, with it, loss of form. Little wonder the 28-year-old has registered eight goals from 26 games across all competitions since his switch from Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League last August.

The future of the Bafana Bafana player has been a subject of transfer speculation now that coach Pitso Mosimane, who signed him from Brighton, resigned from Al Ahly months ago.

Portuguese Ricardo Soares replaced Mosimane, who spent two trophy-laden seasons but was the subject of stinging criticisms from some Al Ahly legends.

Soares has not had the best of starts to his reign either after losing twice—2-0 to Pyramids and 2-1 to Zamalek—winning twice and drawing once across all competitions.

After losing the Egyptian Cup final to Zamalek on Thursday, Soares appealed for patience from the club’s fans, saying injuries and fatigue were taking their toll on his squad.

“I am confident that Ahly will be a very strong team in a short time after the injured players return, and you will witness what I promise,” Soares said.

Al Ahly are in third place on the log table with two games in hand while lying nine points behind the leaders Zamalek.
