Phakamani Mahlambi spotted training at PSL side
Phakamani Mahlambi was spotted at a DStv Premiership club on Monday as he began his search for a new club. Mahlambi is a free agent after Mamelodi Sundowns decided against triggering the option to extend his contract.
FARPost can confirm that the 24-year-old midfielder trained with SuperSport on Monday, although it’s unclear whether a reunion with his former coach Gavin Hunt is in the cards.
The former Al Ahly star played under Hunt at Bidvest Wits before another brief stint under him at Chippa United last season. In fact, the 58-year-old coach, Hunt, handed the talented player his first professional contract at Wits after excelling in The Students’ reserve side.
“Mahlambi arrived at SuperSport on Monday to start training with the team. You must remember that they have a good relationship with Gavin. The player feels that the coach can rescue his career,” said a source.
After excelling as a teenager at the now defunct Wits, he became the first local footballer to play in North Africa when Egyptian giants Al Ahly signed him.
After a disastrous spell in Cairo, he was back home in 2018, featuring for Sundowns before his career took a nosedive. The former youth international’s career has continued to regress due to injuries and off-field issues.
He struggled for game time during loan spells at AmaZulu and, most recently, the Chilli Boys. At Usuthu, he made two league appearances with coach Benni McCarthy calling him out in the media to improve his work rate.
He played three PSL games in the Eastern Cape, all coming in September 2021. However, he struggled with injuries at Chippa.
Meanwhile, the Tshwane-based side is expected to officially announce the arrival of Grant Magerman in the coming days. The former Ajax Cape Town star was signed by the Tshwane side after spending last season on loan at Swallows FC from the Brazilians.
