Royal AM and SuperSport United share spoils in wet Chatsworth Stadium
Royal AM and SuperSport United played a 1-1 stalemate in the DStv Premiership match in the wet conditions at the Chatsworth Stadium.
Bradley Grobler put his name on the scoresheet for the visitors while Kabelo Mahlasela scored for Thwihli Thwahla.
Both sides came to the match having collected the maximum points in their previous league outings.
Royal AM sealed victory in the KZN derby over Lamontville Golden Arrows on the road while SuperSport United defeated Cape Town City.
From the onset, SuperSport United took the initiative and dominated the proceedings in the opening minutes of the game. However, the hosts grew into the game but found it hard to reach the final third.
The ball couldn’t travel smoothly on the surface because of the wet conditions with players also slipping at times.
SUPERSPORT UNITED TOOK THE LEAD VIA BRADLEY GROBLER
In the 25th minute, SuperSport United took the lead through the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer Bradley Grobler. The 35-year-old striker leapt high to head in an in-swinger corner-kick from Patrick Maswangayi.
The flooded pitch kept on making it difficult for both sides while Patrick Nyame nearly gave the ball away in the box as the ball stopped progressing towards him.
MAHLASELA’S EQUALISER FOR ROYAL AM
In the 37th minute, Kabelo Mahlasela leveled matters after he had an easy tap-in from Tebogo Potsane’s cross which had deflected off Thatayoane Ditlhokwe.
The score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Unlike in the first half, Royal AM were somewhat dominant in the early stages of the second stanza.
Moments later, Mxolisi Macuphu wasted a clear-cut chance to put his side in front after his effort went over the bar.
In the 62nd minute, Thapelo Maseko cut in from the right and unleashed a thumping shot which was kept out by the fine save of Nyame.
With over 70 minutes gone on the clock, there was little to separate the two sides as both sets of defences were astute and alert at the back.
As the match approached the end, both teams lowered the pace until the final whistle.
