Rulani Mokwena explains why conceding against Stellenbosch was ‘best thing’
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained why conceding a goal in a match against Stellenbosch FC was the “best thing” that happened to them on the day.
Bafana Ba Style had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their rain-affected DStv Premiership match against Stellies at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mokwena, who’s yet to lose a league game since taking over as head coach, says conceding a goal was a lesson for them as they hardly allow goals in.
While they have scored 40 goals in the league this season, they have only conceded eight.

“It’s a lesson. We win so much that we’ve got to get a few uppercuts to learn lessons,” he told SuperSport TV in the post-match.
“That’s important. It’s very, very important for where we want to go and what we want to try to achieve.
“So, the lessons must come, and sometimes lessons are a little bit bitter to swallow. But we have to get them. That’s how our life is.
“There’s ups and downs, and you try to keep with the ups. But when you get the downs, you must get them quickly and take it with the lessons and move.
“I’m in that space where I appreciate the lesson that came with the equaliser.”
Asked whether he thought the point was fair enough for each team on the day, he answered, “No, we wanted to win.”
“I thought on the balance of play, we did just enough to get the three points, but just enough is not enough in football.
“We got to learn that lesson, and we got to do more, more than the opposition, we got to create more chances. We got to invest a little bit more when we’re 1-0 up to make it two or three, and that’s how we’ll keep going.”
The Brazilians will now shift focus to the CAF Champions League group stage match against Al Ahly, which is set to take place at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 11 March, at 15:00.
