SAFA provides update on Banyana trip as Turkey death toll climbs above 24000
SAFA have provided an update on Banyana Banyana’s trip to Turkey for the Turkish Women’s Cup that will take place between 15-21 February.
Turkey recently suffered an earthquake that left over 24 000 people dead and some missing.
SAFA revealed they were yet to decide if Banyana Banyana should continue with the trip to Turkey or not.
On the other hand, FIFA has given green light for the tournament to continue despite the events in Turkey.
FIFA’S STATE ABOUT THE TURKISH WOMEN’S CUP
“In accordance with article 7 of the regulations, FIFA is happy to provide official authorisation for this women’s tier 1 international tournament.”
“Should you need to make any subsequent changes to the match details, please immediately contact FIMA,” said FIFA.
SAFA have since consulted with different associations in the world about the matter. These include the South African government and Zambia, one of the participants in the tournament.
SAFA further said they had been in contact with the organisers of the Turkish Women’s Cup a couple of times.
THE PURPOSE OF THE TOURNAMENT FOR BANYANA
This tournament is meant to form part of the team’s preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The prestigious tournament will be hosted in Australia and New Zealand in July and August.
Banyana coach Desiree Ellis said she was happy with the opponents that her troops could face in Turkey. She is convinced they will serve as proper preparations for what awaits them in the World Cup later this year.
Banyana’s first game in the Turkish Women’s Cup is scheduled for Wednesday, 15 February, against the host nation, Turkey.
Following Uzbekistan on 18 February and Venezuela on 21 February.
