Senzo Meyiwa murder trial postponed
The murder trial of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been postponed to 22 April 2022.
This comes after advocate Zandile Mshololo, representing accused number five (Sifikuhle Ntuli), indicated that she could not proceed with the trial as she needed five more days to obtain further particulars and consult with defence witnesses.
On Tuesday, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela of the North Gauteng High court in Pretoria granted the postponement and cautioned that there would not be further postponements beyond this.
“The reality of this matter is that we have five accused persons who are entitled to their constitutional rights as outlined in the constitution. But the other reality is that there is a family of the deceased,” said Judge Maumela.
“This incident happened way back, and that family also has the right to know what happened and to know the consequences of what happened from a legal point of view. So, once we speak rights, we should not speak rights as if it’s only one group of people that have rights.”
Five people were arrested in October 2020 in connection with the 2014 murder of the former Orlando Pirates keeper.
The five men are Muzikawukhulelwa Sthemba Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Ncube, and Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa, and Sifikuhle Nkani Ntuli. All men are behind bars serving sentences for various other crimes, while others are still awaiting trial.
