Sifiso Myeni’s Botswana side assessing another South African player
Following Sifiso Myeni’s move to Botswana, Bonginkosi Gumede is the latest former PSL player to be linked with a move to Botswana side VTM, writes Kabelo Boranabi.
VTM unveiled Myeni during the week and have since confirmed interest in the former Bidvest Wits reserves and Jomo Cosmos midfielder, Gumede.
The ambitious second-tier side recently won the promotional play-offs and will look to push for a place in the elite league.
They have gone all out to beef up their squad, with former Wits and Orlando Pirates winger, Sifiso Myeni, their biggest catch so far.
Reports from Botswana are that Gumede spent the week at the club, with the club’s technical team running the rule over him.
However, indications are that VTM are yet to tie the player to a contract as management is awaiting a technical team report.
“We have Bonginkosi Gumede with the team here. He played for Jomo Cosmos, Bidvest Wits’ reserves. He has trained with the team. I think he has spent a week with us.
“But there is nothing to report because the club is yet to make a final decision on him. The technical team will make the decision, so at the moment, the management is waiting for the report on the player,” a VTM source told FARPost.
The holding midfielder is said to have impressed the club’s coaches and could soon find himself a new home in Botswana.
Gumede is to follow in the footsteps of former PSL players who have moved north in search of greener pastures.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward, Manqoba ‘Shakes’ Ngwenya for Botswana’s 16th-time champions, Township Rollers, between 2013 and 2015.
