Stellies part ways with six senior players

Stellenbosch FC is set to part ways with six senior players at the end of the season with indications that the club wants to cut down on its expenses. FARPost is reliably informed that the club has already notified Zitha Kwinika, 28, who is on the verge of joining his boyhood club Kaizer Chiefs, Granwald Scott, 34, Sibusiso Mthethwa, 31, Mark van Herdeen, 34, Robyn Johannes, 35, and Nathan Sinkala, 31 that they will not be part of the team next season.

“The club has already communicated with them. They want to maintain a young squad next season as well as cut down on the wage bill. The players they are letting go are high earners in the team,” a source told FARPost. The Cape Town-based side have enjoyed a good run of form in the DStv Premiership this season, sitting comfortably in the 5th position after 29 games with 10 games won, 14 drawn and only losing five outings.

Despite having many players set to leave at the end of the season, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena expects Steve Barker’s side to maintain their rich vein of form going into the new season. “I don’t see a reason why Steve [Barker] can’t be able to maintain the profile of the team; they look like an organisation that is well run with good facilities, I’ve seen the high-performance facility they have in Stellenbosch, and they’ve got a very good stadium,” Mokwena said recently.

Stellies have several promising youngsters that include Bafana Bafana defender Athenkosi Mcaba, Lance Weaver, Ismail Zuma, Antonio van Wyk and Devon Titus. Barker looks likely to give them more playing opportunities next season.
