Stellies thrash Leicester City to lift PL Next Gen Cup
DStv Diski Challenge reigning champions Stellenbosch FC were crowned 2022 Premier League Next Gen champions for the Midlands Group after thrashing hosts Leicester City 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The final had goals galore in each half, keeping the game entertaining. The Stellies started like a house of fire, setting the tone.
Captain fantastic Devin Titus had a memorable matchday scoring a first-half hat-trick to put his side on cruise control. The hosts managed to find the back of the net, scoring twice in the first half before Kyle Jurgens scored a stunner towards halftime to make it 4-2. The first half then ended as a six-goal thriller.
In the second half, the Capetonians continued from where they left off. Marvin Boji got on the scoresheet scoring a brace in five minutes to make it 6-2. Oshwin Andries also joined the party, netting stunning striker to beat the goalkeeper as the game ended 7-2 in favour of South Africans.
Evangelos Vallios’ charges made a statement in their first match in the semi-finals after defeating Nottingham Forest 4-1 to set a date with Leicester City.
All in all, the Cape Town outfit scored 10 goals in two matches in their preseason competition as they are getting ready for the much anticipated 2022/23 DStv Diski Challenge season, which starts in a few weeks.
Stellies have a huge task ahead as they will aim to make history, becoming the first team to win back-to-back Diski Challenge championships.
In the London Group final, it was a goal galore affair also, which proved to be one-sided. West Ham United defeated crosstown rivals Tottenham Hotspur 8-0 on Saturday to be crowned champions.
