Steve Barker: What Stellenbosch FC must do to end winless streak
Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has stated what his side must do to end their winless streak in the DStv Premiership.
The Capetonians have been struggling for form lately. In their last six league matches they have dropped 15 points. They have suffered three defeats and registered three draws.
In their next game, they face a resurgent Orlando Pirates who finally got back to winning ways after three successive defeats.
The Buccaneers beat Golden Arrows 3-1, thanks to late goals by Terrence Dzvukamanja and Vincent Pule. Monnapule Saleng had scored the opener midway through the first half.
Interestingly, it was the first time they scored a goal in the second half of a league game this season, having failed to do so in the first 15 matches of the 2022/23 term.
WHAT STELLENBOSCH FC MUST DO TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS
While Pirates were beating Arrows, Sekhukhune United were adding to Stellenbosch’s woes. Babina Noko beat the Cape Town side 1-0 courtesy of a Chibuike Ohizu first-half strike.
Barker would be first to admit that a good and positive mentality will be important if they want a quick turnaround.
“It’s not as though we have been playing poorly that we aren’t able to get a win behind us. We just need to keep doing the right things and converting the chances we are creating. That will go a long way in getting that victory we’re looking for,” Barker said.
LOST TOP PLAYERS
Last season, after an impressive run, Stellenbosch FC lost some of their top players while also releasing some veterans to rebuild the squad.
Ashley Du Preez and Zitha Kwinika were snapped up by Kaizer Chiefs with the likes of Granwald Scott, Nathan Sinkala, Stanley Dimgba, Sibusiso Mthethwa, Waseem Isaacs, Marc van Heerden and centre-back Robyn Johannes leaving the club.
The poor run this season has seen the Winelands outfit sink deeper in the log standings. Stellies are now 13th, with 17 points, three points ahead of bottom place Maritzburg United.
