Sundowns cruise to 7-0 victory in CAF opener

Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 7-0 victory in their opening CAF Champions League encounter against Seychelles side La Passe on Sunday.

Sundowns got a bye and had the luxury of starting their campaign in the second preliminary round of the premier continental competition.

From the onset, it was clear it would be a right for the South African champions, as they faced a semi-professional outfit.

The Tshwane giants opened the scoresheet through Grant Kekana in the first minute before double scorer Gaston Sirino added the second in the 13th minute.

Their third was a gift of a goal, thanks to a La Passe defence that was caught napping in the 20thminute.

From a Marcelo Allende corner kick, Jupitor turned the ball into his own net.

Aubrey Modiba added the fourth in the 40th minute, with a scorcher from outside the box. Four minutes later, Sirino got his second goal of the day, making it 5-0 as they went to the break.

In the second half, comfortably in the driving seat, they made four changes.

Bongani Zungu came in for Rushine De Reuck, Sipho Mbule replaced his former SuperSport United teammate Teboho Mokoena and Thapelo Morena was introduced for Khuliso Mudau.

Cassius Mailula got a run as Themba Zwane made way for the academy graduate.

It was not too long before the substitutes made a mark in the game. Mbule added the sixth goal in the 58th minute, just four minutes after coming on.

Thereafter, Sundowns managed the game, and the technical team was able to bring on Musa Lebusa for Kekana in the 63rd minute.

Sphelele Mkhulise, who played the full game, scored the seventh in the 87th minute.

Sundowns will play the second leg at home next weekend as La Passe have no stadium meeting CAF standards back home.
