Thalea Smidt full of praise for Sundowns’ short turnaround
Midfielder Thalea Smidt praised her Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies side for their quick turnaround in their Hollywoodbets Super League title defence which faced several stern tests.
The Banyana Banyana international commended the red-hot Brazilians for the way they played after the COSAFA zonal qualifier final disappointment as the team has been playing almost twice every week in order to catch up with other teams in Super League.
Since their resumption of league games, the Tshwane-based side thrashed Golden Ladies with a 7-1 win which was followed by a 1-0 victory over Durban Ladies. A 7-0 win was recorded against Tsunami Queens thereafter a 3-0 win over City Lads Ladies.
That amazing fine form has seen Downs Ladies reclaim back their top spot. As things stand, Masandawana are flourishing on the summit of the table with 45 points after 16 games.
Overall, the side has registered 15 wins out of the 16 matches played and scored a league-high 72 goals and conceded only nine goals in the process.
WHAT SMIDT SAID…
“The last month or so have been tough due to the number of games in hand we have had to play. The short turnaround time has had its toll on the team, but we have maintained our bravery game after game,” Smidt told Sundowns’ media.
“Aside from the hectic scheduling, we have been pushed to the limit by the quality of the teams we have faced in recent times. Despite their tactical set-ups, we have managed to enjoy a perfect run since COSAFA. We are pleased with how far we have come and our position on the table reflects our hard work and determination.”
With the Super League now on a mini-break until mid-September, Smidt reckons that the break will help them to get the much-needed rest and work some certain issues.
“This is a perfect opportunity for us to catch our breath. The plan is to reassess ourselves and reflect on our performances thus far,” she added.
“The team has suffered several injuries in the last few weeks, and we hope to be fully healthy ahead of our next game. The season is far from over and everyone within the team knows this.”
