The one team Mashego believes will cause upsets at the FIFA World Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego has revealed Senegal as one team that can cause upsets at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.
The ex-Cape Town City man believes that the Lions of Teranga can pull a shocker. He says so given the fact that they are also the current African champions under the tutelage of Aliou Cissé.
With the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye, Cheikou Kouyate etc, anything is possible to pull a shocker.
MASHEGO’S FAVOURITE TEAM AT THE WORLD CUP
“I like the way Senegal has produced several generations of talented footballers,” the Bafana Bafana international told Sundowns Magazine.
“At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, they had the likes of Henri Camara, Khalilou Fadiga and El Hadji Diouf.
“Presently, they have some big names such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy and Sadio Mane [who is, unfortunately, has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from his injury].
“I strongly believe they can upset several big teams in Qatar.”
Cissé’s troops are pitted in Group A alongside the hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Netherlands
Senegal open their group stage campaign against the Netherlands tonight.
The kick-off is scheduled to start at 18:00 at Al-Thumama Stadium.
The 24-year-old footballer went on to divulge his favourite goal ever being scored at this prestigious tournament in the past.
“There have been many great goals, but the one that stands out the most is Robin van Persie’s sensational diving header against Spain at the 2014 edition,” he added.
“Sometimes, I still wonder how he managed to score such a magical goal.”
The talented left-back joined Bafana Ba Style in September this year on a permanent deal from the Citizens after being heavily linked with a move to Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs.
