Truter weighs in on AmaZulu league title prospects

AmaZulu FC coach Brandon Truter has insisted that his side is capable of challenging for the DStv Premiership title despite lingering doubts on their championship credentials.

The coach said this on Saturday evening in a post-match interview after the 2-1 win over SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“If you don’t have that ambition, then you shouldn’t be coaching. As a coach, you must win trophies, and the objective of the club is that we must qualify for the Champions League. As for the trophies, I want to challenge everything,” he said.

Truter said that while the team is still under construction, challenging for the league and other trophies is a must for them.

“Some people are still doubting us, but beating the likes of Cape Town City and SuperSport United gives us confidence that we can do much better this season,” he said.

The former Swallows mentor justified his title talk by saying all teams in the top-flight league have the ambition to vie for silverware.

Usuthu are third on the log table with seven points from three games after playing out to a draw with TS Galaxy, then beating Cape Town City and SuperSport United by 2-1 margins.

The sound start to the season has made AmaZulu early favourites to win the first q-Innovation alongside their neighbours Richards Bay FC and The Rockets.

Usuthu will be gunning for their first win on the road; then, they face Swallows on Friday night.

The games are coming thick and fast for Usuthu, who then face wounded Lamontville Golden Arrows in their first Durban Derby of the season at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

His remarks come after Cape Town City’s Eric Tinkler admitted all topflight teams were merely playing bridesmaid to defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Brazilians have won it five times on the trot and have a chance to retain it again this season.
